What to Do When a Backlink Disappears: A Practical Recovery Plan

What to do when a backlink disappears depends on whether it has truly been removed, moved, or simply missed by a monitoring tool. Acting on a single alert can waste time or create an awkward conversation with a publisher. A better approach is to verify the change, work out what caused it, and then choose the least disruptive way to restore the link or protect the value it was providing.

Confirm the link is actually missing

Start by opening the page that was supposed to contain your link. Check the live page in a browser, then inspect its source or use a crawler to see whether the link appears in the rendered HTML. Some pages load content slowly, block crawlers, or show different versions to visitors and monitoring tools. A temporary server problem can also produce a false alert.

Check the page on both desktop and mobile, and try again later if it fails to load. If the page has a canonical URL, redirects, or a changed slug, the link may have moved rather than vanished. Record what you find, including the date and the page URL you checked, before contacting anyone.

    Check what changed

A missing backlink is not the only change worth investigating. The link may still be present but point to the wrong destination, use different anchor text, or have been given a nofollow attribute. Each change has a different implication. A broken destination can frustrate readers; altered anchor text may reflect an editorial decision; and a nofollow attribute means the link is treated differently by search engines.

Compare the current page with your original record. Note the referring page, target URL, anchor text, link attribute, and the date you last confirmed it was intact. If the destination now returns an error, check whether your own page moved during a site update. Restoring a redirect or fixing an internal URL may solve the problem without asking the publisher to change anything.

    Use a consistent tracking process

Regular checks make it easier to spot genuine losses before they become forgotten. A backlink monitoring guide can help you compare tool alerts with manual checks and keep records of guest-post links after publication. Monitoring and link building are separate tasks: a service that helps arrange links does not necessarily provide the external monitoring needed to confirm that they remain live.

    1. Log each published link. Save the referring page, destination, anchor text, publication date, and publisher contact details.
    2. Set a check schedule. Review new links soon after publication, then check them periodically. More frequent checks may be sensible for important pages or during a site migration.
    3. Review alerts. Treat a tool notification as a prompt to investigate, not proof that a link has disappeared.
    4. Verify the live page. Confirm the link, destination, and attributes in a browser or crawler.
    5. Classify the change. Mark it as missing, redirected, broken, altered, or temporarily unavailable.
    6. Follow up and record the outcome. Note any publisher response, fix, or decision to leave the change as it is.

A basic spreadsheet is often enough to start. Add columns for the referring URL, target URL, anchor text, last checked date, status, evidence, contact, and next action. Use clear status labels such as “live”, “needs review”, and “confirmed missing” so a warning does not get mistaken for a verified loss.

Contact the publisher with a specific request

If the link is genuinely gone, first look for a straightforward explanation. The page may have been edited, the article may have moved, or the publisher may have removed a section that included the link. Send a short, courteous message that identifies the article and explains what you observed. If you can, include the original destination and the relevant section, but avoid implying that the publisher is obliged to restore the link.

Ask whether the removal was intentional and whether the link can be reinstated or updated. If the destination changed, give the publisher the correct URL and explain why it is appropriate for the page’s readers. A relevant, functioning resource gives them a practical reason to consider the request. If they decline or do not respond, record that outcome and move on rather than sending repeated messages.

Consider whether the loss needs action

Not every missing backlink warrants recovery work. Consider whether the referring page still receives visits, whether it is relevant to your audience, and whether the link sent useful referral traffic. A link from an outdated or unrelated page may have little practical value. Put your time into links that support discovery, credibility, or meaningful visits, and keep expectations realistic: no individual backlink guarantees a particular search position.

Sometimes the real issue is a website change on your side. If a redesign has changed page addresses or templates, work with whoever manages the site to preserve important destinations and check links before launch. When hiring outside help, ask about migration testing, redirects, and post-launch checks. For a Wix project, this overview of questions to ask a Wix developer can help you assess relevant experience and agree on the work before it begins. Osdire is one freelance marketplace where buyers can compare services across categories; whichever route you use, make responsibilities and approval steps clear.

    Prevent the next surprise

Make backlink checks part of routine website maintenance rather than a one-off response to an alert. Keep the spreadsheet current, investigate tool warnings before taking action, and note site changes that could affect destinations. This creates a useful history: when a link changes, you can quickly tell whether the cause is a publisher edit, a technical fault, or an inaccurate alert—and choose a proportionate next step.
